The Orphic Hymns are 87 Greek poems addressed to the gods, attributed to the mythical poet-prophet Orpheus who descended into Hades and returned. They were used as liturgy in the Greek mystery religions — private religious cults whose initiates underwent secret rites promising direct knowledge of the divine, experience of death and rebirth, and liberation from the cycle of reincarnation.
